New Germany State Park
New Germany State Park is located in the beautiful mountains of the Savage River State Forest of Garrett County. The park is a maze of trails primarily for cross country skiing. However, the park is open year round and the trails provide for excellent mountain biking.
The Old Depot Train Grade
The Old Depot is yet another historic feature of Western Maryland. The old train grade which the depot once used is still in existence. The terrain on the grade varies from flat, wide, dirt roads to technical single track.
The C & O Canal Towpath
Description
The C & O Canal towpath in Cumberland, Md is open to hikers, bikers and equestrians. It is 184 miles long, extending from Cumberland, Md to Georgetown, Md. Heading towards Georgetown, the towpath is at a slight descent which makes it an easy ride.. Campsites and wells are located along the path at five to seven mile intervals. The towpath is an excellent trail for beginners.
How To Get There
From West of Cumberland
Take Interstate 68 to Cumberland, Md. Get off on exit 43 C. Turn left onto Queen City drive. At traffic light, turn left onto Harrison St. Harrison St. will dead end into a public parking lot of the Western Maryland Station Center. Park and follow signs to the towpath.
From East of Cumberland
Take Interstate 68 to Cumberland, Md. Get off on exit 43 C. Turn left and go through the traffic light. Follow Harrison St. which will dead end into a public parking lot of the Western Maryland Station Center. Park and follow signs to the towpath.
Special Note
During flooding and high water, parts of the canal can be closed to biking. Check with the C & O Canal Visitor Center inside the scenic railroad station for more information, or call (301) 722-8226.
